Tourism Geography Research Group
Research topics
Tourism geography research in Hungary dates back to the 1960s. The work of Miklós Abella (1922–1975), István Berényi (1934–), and Gábor Michalkó (1969–) laid the foundations that enabled the Institute of Geography and its predecessors to become a leading center of tourism research in Hungary. Initially, research focused primarily on the statistically grounded analysis of tourism’s economic impacts. This was later followed by the examination of socio-geographical relationships. After the political transition (1990), the dominant direction shifted toward product-oriented approaches to tourism. Today, research concentrates on the theoretical interpretation of tourism’s spatial and temporal dimensions. In collaboration with both domestic and international partners, the group conducts transdisciplinary basic research.
The main research areas of the group include:
urban tourism
safety and security in tourism
shopping tourism
the impact of tourism on quality of life
