National Atlas of Hungary Research Group
About the research group
Since the 1960s (and as a publisher since the 1980s), the Institute has played a defining role in the creation and editing of Hungary’s national atlas (MNA), a key national symbol embodied in maps. Since the early 2010s, the research group has coordinated the volumes of the new edition of the MNA, involving dozens of institutions and hundreds of authors, editors and other contributors. The composition of the research group is typically aligned with specific thematic areas and forthcoming volumes. The traditional volumes published to date are: MNA 1 (State and Nation, 2024), MNA 2 (Natural Environment, 2018, 2024), and MNA 3 (Society, 2021). In addition to the Hungarian- and English-language printed editions, the research group aims to provide digital visualisation, available in a view-only format as downloadable PDF files on the website www.nationalatlas.hu. An interactive version of the MNA 3 thematic volume has been accessible since 2021 at www.emna.hu. Alongside publishing the traditional MNA volumes, the research group’s objective is to operate an interactive geoinformatics system on these websites focusing on national and regional knowledge of the Carpathian Basin. In addition to a historical perspective, this system seeks to provide up-to-date information on the spatial aspects of the state of the natural environment, society and the economy.
